Instructional Material Review and Parent Involvement Procedure
The primary objective of each school’s media and technology program is to enrich and support the instructional program by making available supplementary instructional materials that include a wide variety of print, nonprint, and digital materials and resources of varying levels of difficulty based upon different needs, interests, and viewpoints. In accordance with Board policy 3200, Selection of Instructional Materials, ultimate responsibility for the selection and retention of instructional materials is delegated to professional staff under the direction of the Superintendent. Thus, the Superintendent retains final authority.
Media coordinators are responsible for aligning the selection of supplementary instructional materials relevant to the school’s media collection and purchasing plans. District instructional services personnel may periodically review selections for consistency with content standards, curricula, media collection and purchasing plans, and the grades and developmental levels of the students for whom the resources will be available. In addition, Rutherford County Schools recognizes and respects the essential role of parents and legal guardians in the education and development of their students. Thus, the school system also provides parent resources and upholds parent rights with regard to certain instructional materials.
Policy 3210-R, Parental Inspection Of and Objection to Instructional Material -- Instructional Material Review and Parent Involvement Procedure, is intended to provide general guidance in determining whether or not the retention of certain instructional materials is appropriate following (1) a parental objection made pursuant to policy 3210, Parental Inspection of and Objection to Instructional Materials, or (2) any administrative review initiated at the sole discretion of the Superintendent.
