In an effort to realize a shared vision of preparing students for college and career success, district leadership and staff recognized that students today do not learn in the same way as the students of the past.  Today’s students access, organize, and share information very differently, and do so using modern technology tools.  Rutherford County Schools saw the potential to harness students’ desire to learn differently and their native command and interest in technology to further engage students in their own academic learning.  Thus in 2010, RCS launched the Going G.L.O.B.A.L. initiative, which stands for Growing Learning Opportunities Beyond All Limits, in an attempt to provide every student with access to modern technology tools and high quality learning experiences as a component of a larger curriculum and instruction initiative focused on preparing students for college and career success.  As with all efforts of improvement in Rutherford County Schools, this initiative continues to be refined for the benefit of students and staff.

Goals of the Initiative

  • To provide all teachers with appropriate and engaging technology tools, as well high-quality professional development focused on seamlessly integrating those tools into instruction.

  • To create a 21st century learning environment that frees students from the barriers of time and place.

  • To provide access to digital resources and tools that enrich student learning experiences in the classroom.

  • To provide access to instructional content, lessons, learning materials, and teachers outside the classroom.

  • To prepare students for college and career success by developing the skills and using the tools of the future.

Steps of the Initiative

  • Every teacher was given a laptop and proper training on using the device prior to the deployment of devices to students (Fall 2010.)

  • District support staff positions were expanded to include a total of ten instructional technology facilitators, seven school-based technicians, and a director of instructional technology.  

  • ITFs work both at the school and district level directly with teachers to provide professional development and classroom coaching focused on infusing technology seamlessly into everyday teaching and learning.

  • District professional development centers on incorporating the SAMR model for technology integration.

  • Seven technicians are housed at each middle and high school to ensure proper device management and maintenance.

  • Three additional technicians serve across the district to support technology needs in the elementary schools.

  • The director of instructional technology works to support the instructional program by designing, developing, implementing, supervising and coordinating programs related to the district’s use of media and instructional technology resources to enhance learning

  • Students in grades 5 through 12 are given a Macbook Air for school and home use, while students in kindergarten through grade 3 have iPad Airs for classroom use.  All classrooms are equipped with Promethean boards for instructional use.

Expansion of the Initiative

In 2015, Rutherford County Schools launched a second phase of Going G.L.O.B.A.L to further expand the technology-rich learning environments in the elementary schools and ensure equal access to technology and high-quality instruction across the district.  The goals of this expansion include:

  • Providing an infrastructure of tools, systems, and services in all schools that support district initiatives.

  • Providing laptops to students in fifth grade and iPads to students and teachers in kindergarten through fourth grade.

  • Providing continued support and growth opportunities for teachers.

Deployment Totals of the Initiative

  • 6,600 laptops (Grades 5-12)

  • 3,789 iPads (Grades K-4)

  • 645 Interactive whiteboards (Grades PreK-12)

  • Upgraded existing wireless infrastructure to higher density WiFi coverage in all schools

Positive Impact on Instruction  

  • Allows teachers to adapt lessons to be student-centered and meet the individual learning needs of students.

  • Increases student engagement due to the interactive and collaborative nature of the devices.

  • Provides powerful tools for improving teaching and learning with instant formative assessments and skill specialization applications.

  • Inspires teacher and student creativity with engaging educational applications and opportunities to create learning tasks that were not previously possible in the classroom.
