(Forest City, NC) August 22, 2011 – At 4:00 pm on Monday, August 22, 2011, the Golden
LEAF Foundation presented the Rutherford County Schools Education Foundation (RCSEF)
with a ceremonial check to support the “Going G.L.O.B.A.L.” initiative for students in grades
K-12. The presentation took place in the Rutherford County Schools boardroom and
was attended by local elected officials, Rutherford County Schools’ board members and
administrators, and Rutherford County Schools Education Foundation members.

Through the Going G.L.O.B.A.L. initiative, RCSEF has equipped each K-12 classroom with
an interactive whiteboard; installed wireless infrastructure in each school; provided a laptop
for each K-12 certified staff member; and provided each student in grades 6-12 with a laptop.
Middle and high school administrators and teachers have been planning and pursuing
professional development in anticipation of this project since 2009.

Golden LEAF funds will be used to pay for a portion of the continuing cost for student laptops
in grades 6-12. Golden LEAF also provided all of Rutherford County Early College High School
students with laptops for its initial one-to-one laptop program that began in January of 2008.

“The Golden LEAF Foundation supports growing the talent, knowledge and skill of our youth,
especially in the rural areas of our state,” said Dan Gerlach, Golden LEAF president. “The
Rutherford County Schools’ project is dedicated to transforming their classrooms into 21st
century digital learning environments. The implementation of this program will help provide the
skills necessary to be college and career ready.”
