School Social Work Services

Rutherford County Schools' social work activities promote and enhance educational access and success among students . Those activities include providing services that strengthen partnerships between school and home, overcoming barriers to learning, providing interventions that promote students' graduation success, and encouraging good school attendance habits. Specific assistance and support are available in several areas, including:

Truancy Diversion.  The school social worker supports schools' access to the district's Truancy Diversion Program, which intends to promote good school attendance habits and discourage violations of North Carolina's compulsory attendance law through effective intervention and assistance.

Mental Health Needs.  The school social worker serves as the liaison between local schools and mental health agencies servicing our county. School-based mental health services may be accessed using forms available in the office of the principal and/or school counselor.

Dropout Prevention.  The school social worker provides an additional layer of personalized support services to students and their families when students are at risk of dropping out of school.

Child Abuse and Neglect.  While school personnel are not charged with or responsible for investigating of substantiating abuse or neglect, school personnel are required by law to report suspected incidents of abuse, neglect, or dependency to the local Department of Social Services.  Please contact the school social worker for a review of those guidelines and requirements, or for assistance with possible referrals to the local Department of Social Services.

Consultation.  The school social worker is available to consult and partner with school officials around the design and implementation of programs and services to support students and families.

Individuals seeking school social work support are encouraged to contact the school district's social worker:
