Julie Caldwell elected Region 8 President

R-S Central High School recently attended the 2011 North Carolina SkillsUSA Region 8 Conference on November 18th.  R-S Central had 18 students attend the one-day conference and competed in 9 different contests.

Cameron Green placed 1st and Hayden Tesseneer placed 2nd in the Architectural Drafting contest. This event is for second year Architectural students and requires students to produce a floor plan of a proposed structure.  They must make revisions within a two hour time limit.

Julie Caldwell and Leah King placed 2nd in the Debate contest in which they debated current trade and industrial topics including education.

Andrew McArthur placed 2nd in the Drafting I event. The event is for entry-level drafting students and requires each student to prepare an Orthographic Projection and an Isometric view.

Katie Yelton placed 2nd in Job Interview. The contest is divided into three phases: preliminary interviews, employment application, and in-depth interviews. Contestants are evaluated on their understanding of employment procedures faced when applying for positions in the occupational areas for which they are training.

Olivia Caldwell placed 2nd in the SkillsUSA Pledge event. The event is for first year SkillsUSA members. Students are required to recite the pledge and describe the meaning.

Morgan Helton placed 2nd in the SkillsUSA Poster event. The poster contest allows students to develop a poster based the SkillsUSA creed and theme.

The Quiz Bowl team, comprised of Jacob Fleming, Jesus Gonzalez-Duran, Alex Harris, Tyler Jolley, and Steele Michael, placed 1st.  The Quiz Bowl tests the team’s ability to quickly respond to questions covering areas of academic knowledge, professional development, and current events

Dustin Atchley placed 3rd, Kayla Waters placed 4th and Sonora Hartzog placed 5th in the Technical Drafting event.  The contest is for third year drafting students.  It requires each student to prepare a working drawing of a proposed product within a two-hour time limit.

Matt Atchley placed 3rd in the Tool Identification event. This contest requires students to correctly identify and spell tools used in the trade and industrial workforce.

The following students were elected to the SkillsUSA Region 8 office for the 2012-2013 school year:  President - Julie Caldwell, Vice President - Morgan Helton, Secretary - Olivia Caldwell, and Treasurer - Dustin Atchley.

The R-S Central SkillsUSA club will now compete at the SkillsUSA State Conference in Greensboro on April 17th - 19th.  R-S Central SkillsUSA advisor is Brad Hutchins.

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives; working together to ensure America has a skilled work force.  SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving high school students that are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations.  The club is formerly known as VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America).
