McNair logoRutherford County Schools and the Robert and Janice McNair Educational Foundation are pleased to announce an exciting new collaborative supporting science education.

In an effort to expand hands-on learning opportunities and cultivate real-world connections in the medical research field, Rutherford County Schools and the Robert and Janice McNair
Educational Foundation have partnered with McNair Scholars from the McNair Medical Institute at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, to create the McNair Science
Education Collaborative.  The program will match each participating high school science or allied health teacher in Rutherford County Schools with a current graduate student or
postdoctoral fellow working in a McNair Scholar’s laboratory.

Monica Lee of the McNair Educational Foundation said, “We are very excited to have the opportunity to bring together two of Robert and Janice McNair’s passions – educational opportunities for all students and cutting-edge medical research.

Through this partnership, participating teachers will link science curricula with transformational medical research in ways that enrich the learning experiences of teachers and students alike.  I congratulate our inaugural class of Teaching Fellows on their commitment to teaching excellence and inspired student learning.”

Four Rutherford County Schools teachers have been named 2015-16 McNair Teaching
     • Karl Bradley; R-S Central High School; Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, and AP
Environmental Science Teacher
     • Courtney Canipe; East Rutherford High School; Earth/Environmental Science
     • Mickey Moore; East Rutherford High School; Health Sciences and Nursing
Fundamentals Teacher
     • Emily Powell; Rutherford Early College High School; Biology, Chemistry, and
Earth/Environmental Science Teacher

Each teacher will partner with a selected graduate student or postdoctoral fellow to discuss curriculum content and develop curriculum connections through demonstrations, activities, and experiments related to current scientific research of the McNair Scholars.  Many program activities will be conducted using technology resources and virtual classrooms.  At least once annually, the Houston-based McNair Teaching Fellows and/or a McNair Scholar will visit Rutherford County Schools to speak at student assemblies, lead classroom activities, or provide professional development experiences for teachers. Participating teachers will engage in professional development opportunities that include visiting McNair Scholar laboratories at the Baylor College of Medicine.  Additionally, grant funding will be available for supplies and materials to support classroom projects associated with the program.

Rutherford County Schools Superintendent, Dr. Janet Mason, announced the names of 2015-2016 McNair Teaching Fellows at the June meeting of the Rutherford County Board of
Education and expressed her appreciation for this new collaboration.  She stated, “We are grateful for our strong partnership with the Robert and Janice McNair Educational Foundation and the opportunities this partnership creates to improve educational outcomes for our students. The McNair Science Education Collaborative is another great example of our continued focus on growing learning opportunities beyond all limits.  I congratulate each
teacher selected as a McNair Teaching Fellow and appreciate their willingness to participate in this new endeavor.”
