Rutherford County Schools has once again outperformed the state in multiple measures of school performance according to reports published by the North Carolina State Board of Education earlier today. For the third consecutive year, the State Board awarded letter grades to each of North Carolina’s public schools based upon student proficiency and growth. Across North Carolina, 77% of traditional public schools and 72% of public charter schools received a School Performance Grade of “C” or better. In Rutherford County Schools, 94% of schools were awarded a School Performance Grade of “C” or better.

“Again this year, the number of our local schools receiving a School Performance Grade of ‘A’ or ‘B’ increased,” said superintendent Dr. Janet Mason. “The number of local schools awarded these highest possible marks has tripled since School Performance Grades were first issued two years ago.” Mason also noted that School Performance Grades of ‘A’ and ‘B’ were awarded to schools in RCS at twice the rate evident across the state and at four times the rate evident in similar North Carolina counties.

“Today’s School Performance Grades reflect significant improvements within several key academic indicators,” explained assistant superintendent Dr. David Sutton. “Our elementary and middle school students continue to outperform their peers across the state in reading, and today’s reports demonstrate even more improvement in that area. Their achievement in math increased by more than four points and now exceeds statewide performance. Science achievement rose by nearly six points in the elementary and middle grades. At the high school level, our students posted a double-digit increase in math performance and improved by almost six points in Biology.”

“Today’s reports also highlight improvements in indicators of college and career readiness,” Mason added. “Student performance on the ACT assessment, one indicator of college readiness, improved by four points this year. At the same time, we also saw a four-point increase in students’ performance on the ACT WorkKeys assessment, an industry-recognized indicator of career readiness. We’re pleased that today’s results reflect great progress in so many areas, and we’re excited to continue that important work this year to ensure that all students graduate prepared for college and career success.”
