Every February kicks off an exciting time for families of pre-kindergarten age children and for Rutherford County Schools (RCSNC) – time for kindergarten registration! Though preparing for a child’s first days of elementary school is a thrilling prospect, anxiety over paperwork and processes can sometimes spoil the fun. Not this year, though! RCSNC is excited to welcome children and families to kindergarten and invites them to begin that journey with Project Kindergarten.

Project Kindergarten will include a host of fun-filled events from February to April. Pre-kindergarten age children and their families are invited to take part in as many of those events as they can. Children do not have to be registered for kindergarten to attend. Even if children aren’t quite old enough to begin kindergarten or parents are unsure which school their child will attend, Project Kindergarten is open to all.

The ‘main event’ this spring will be Kinder-Palooza, a festival-style event to be held on Thursday, February 8, from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Carolina Event and Conference Center (CECC). At Kinder-Palooza, children will have the opportunity to ride the Magic School Bus with Ms. Frizzle, meet characters from Letterland, enjoy iPad activities, see robotics demonstrations, have their faces painted, take pictures with a green screen, try on high school graduation robes, and more. All RCSNC schools, the McNair Foundation, and the RCS Education Foundation will be present at Kinder-Palooza, so families can meet teachers and administrators from across the district, as well as ask questions about registration, programs, schools, and activities. Rumor has it that there may also be sweets, giveaways, and prizes, making Kinder-Palooza even more of a treat!

The fun will continue after Kinder-Palooza. Each elementary school has chosen a special after-school event to welcome pre-kindergarten families as honored guests. These regularly scheduled events – like Math Madness, STEM Night and basketball games – will offer families of pre-kindergarten children a first-hand look at some of the exciting events and activities that regularly occur in elementary school. They will also have the opportunity to tour schools, meet teachers, and get a sneak peek at experiences available to children. The full list of these school events includes:

  • Cliffside Elementary: Bringing Letterland to Life - March 27, 6:30pm
  • Ellenboro Elementary: BINGO for BOOKS - February 15, 6-8pm
  • Forest City-Dunbar Elementary: Read Across America Family Event - March 1, 5:30-7pm
  • Forrest Hunt Elementary: STARfest (Spring Festival) - March 16, 5-8pm
  • Harris Elementary: Spring Fling Family Event - March 23, 4-7pm
  • Mt. Vernon-Ruth Elementary: Math Madness - March 1, 4-6pm
  • Pinnacle Elementary: Basketball Games - February 12, 5:30pm
  • Rutherfordton Elementary: PTO/4th Grade Music Program on NC Heritage - March 22, 6:30pm
  • Spindale Elementary: Family Science Night - March 22, 5-6pm
  • Sunshine Elementary: Family STEM Night - February 12, 4-6pm

Families are encouraged to attend events both within and outside their school attendance areas. In fact, RCSNC encourages families to attend events across the district, as children will be exposed to a variety of exciting features and families will enjoy a rich overview of various elementary school offerings.

Finally, children who are registered to attend kindergarten during the 2018-19 school year are invited to Kindergarten Orientation on April 24. Specific details will be available closer to the event date; however, Kindergarten Orientation is another opportunity for children and families to prepare for the exciting year ahead as they embark on their elementary school journey together.
