Parent & Family Engagement

Rutherford County Schools believes that the education of children is an on-going cooperative partnership between the home and the school.  Parents are their children's first teachers; therefore, the continued engagement of parents in the educational process is most important in fostering and improving educational achievement.

As educators we support teaching and learning as a team effort in preparing our children for the future.  Parent engagement is a critical component of student academic achievement and school improvement.  Our goal is to establish a partnership between the home and the school to support learning for all students in every school.  Research from the National Parent Teacher Association has shown that when parents are engaged in their children's education the following results occur:
  • Higher grades, test scores, and graduation rates
  • Better school attendance
  • Increased motivation and better self-esteem
  • Lower rates of suspension
  • Decreased use of drugs and alcohol
  • Fewer instances of violent behavior

Being engaged in your child's education is as easy as .....

  • Attending parent-teacher conferences, PTA meetings, and parent nights
  • Contacting teachers or staff when you have a concern about your child
  • Volunteering in your child's class or school when possible
  • Checking your child's book bag daily for home-school communication
  • Making sure your child attends school regularly and arrives on time daily
  • Helping your child complete his/her homework assignments
  • Reading with your child nightly
  • Providing a study space for your child and providing him/her with needed materials

The Rutherford County Board of Education believes that the engagement of Title I parents in the design and implementation of the Title I program will increase the effectiveness of the program and contribute significantly to the success of children.
